My Comfort Food

21 Oct 2012

I visit home (Bandung) almost every other weekend. This time I promised Francis to bring back some Batagor to Jakarta. My favorite one is Batagor Abun, less known than Batagor Kingsley or Batagor Riri, but more suited for my personal taste - less chewy but with the right combination of the tapioca and fish meat. The sweet peanut sauce still has pieces of nuts left behind, giving the additional crunch to each bite.
On the way to pick up Batagor Abun, which is located on a small alley called Gang Mahmud, we usually passed by a small local eatery, Lotek Mahmud. It is the local destination to get Lotek, Rujak and other simple Indonesian dishes.
I ordered Nasi Bakmoy, a Peranakan (Indonesian Chinese) comfort dish. Pieces of meats and tofu flavored with sweet soy sauce is placed on top of steaming white rice, poured by savory clear soup, garnished with fried red onion and leeks. When I took this dainty spoonful into my mouth, the aroma of onion, warmth of the soup together with the soft bite of meat and tofu comforted and brought me to enjoy the drizzle and gloomy skies.
